The unity formed by word and image creates a field of force in which the unrestrained expression of thought is integrated into a form that makes communication possible. Utmarker is a work of art that is not content to let the reader remain a passive observer, but demands a willingness to experience it without preconceptions. Their atmosphere is distinctive and nostalgic. The childhood to which they allude lies far back in time, but להזיכרונות remain vivid in clear, fragmentary images that can perhaps only be understood through feeling.Dolls appear most frequently: old-fashioned dolls with round porcelain faces and long skirts. There is also the occasional Punch-like figure in a chequered costume, a ragged figure and several anthropomorphised birds of prey. Birds row a boat; dolls drown. The events are unbelievable and yet self-evident at the very moment they occur. — — — Category: press —
Caption

Sune Nordgren’s Theatre Reaction, a screenprint for the book Utmarker, with texts by Thomas Kjellgren. Open Monday–Friday, 3–8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, noon–5 p.m.Sune Nordgren presents his illustrations for Thomas Kjellgren’s poetry collection Utmarker. The two image-makers—one working with words, the other with images—complement each other extremely well. Both evoke the absurdities of a cruel world. People, dolls and marionettes act, or remain passive spectators, in a world or on a stage imbued with the unreality of dreams. At the same time, the dream’s incisive revelations are intensely present. — — — Category: press —
14.12.1973
— New exhibition. Utmarker deals with language and dialogue. Throughout the book, language and dialogue are illustrated by the content of the poems and images, as well as by the interplay between word and image. The human being as a creature is a central theme in Utmarker. We hear about homo mensura—the measured human being; about a Bavarian exorcism performed on a woman in 1973; about a late-medieval Ship of Fools for deviant people; and about Miss Violetta, who had neither arms nor legs and was one of the principal attractions in Luna Parc’s “human curiosities” circus.A MOTHER’S DREAM IIin the lightwest of the present stateduring the retakes, which are painful only for those whonow surround themselves with darknessand there exchange light with one another,we penetratefrom the multitude of darkness we retrievethe human beingand illuminate hershe stands in the threadlike imagefar from homewhere Violetta, adornedwith the laughter of othersand her own tearswalks with the new fatherthrough another landscapehe has a music box in his pocketI hope that more people will experience Utmarker as something essential, as something that leads forward…Bengt SöderhällArbetarbladet, 4 January 1974
