The American conceptual artist Phil Berkman from Chicago is exhibiting at Galerie S:t Petri, Lund, from 28 March to 3 April 1975.
It is the first time he is showing his work in Europe.
Phil Berkman has been working with experimental art since the early 1970s.
In various manifestations in the USA and South America, he has presented his ideas through different new media — the same media that many Western artists use today — such as video, photography, film, and performance.
At the Lund exhibition, his work is presented in the form of photographs, including pieces he calls “Identity Reduction”, “TV News for the Deaf”, “Artist/Critic”, and “Not Nostalgically Remembered” — the latter referring to President Nixon.
About his view on art, Phil Berkman writes:
“We are surprised by a visiting friend, perhaps foreign to our culture, who sees people, the city, customs, etc., from another perspective.
I believe the artist is like this stranger, but without having to leave his world.
He creates his own rituals based on the need for rituals; he can show the illusory act of looking without seeing and finds everywhere opportunities for new perceptions.
Mundane and everyday things, actions, and rituals play a role in a world where their meaning or meaninglessness is often overlooked.
These ‘small mirrors’ reflect our physical and psychological environment.
My works are about examining the many nuances of seemingly simple things, and the closer they come to real-life situations — without imitating them — the better.
The difference is what makes it my art.”
The exhibition is open on weekdays 15:00–20:00,
and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays 12:00–17:00.
