Galerie S:t Petri presents, from June 8 to 27, 1973, paintings in ink and watercolour by Masaaki Ueshima from Kyoto. His work is deeply rooted in traditional Japanese art — its philosophy and technique. Both Zen Buddhism and the improvised brush painting known in Japanese as haiga, or “visual haiku,” have been sources of inspiration for him.
Ueshima has illustrated three books with such spontaneous brush paintings — some in colour, others in shades of black ink.
Masaaki Ueshima seeks to preserve as much as possible of the old Kyoto tradition. He lives in the mountains in a 250-year-old farmhouse, which has been transformed into an exquisite treasure house for Yamato Mingei, or Japanese folk art and craftsmanship.
This is his first exhibition in Sweden.
“Yamato Mingei” refers to the traditional Japanese folk art movement that celebrates handmade craftsmanship, everyday objects, and the simple beauty of natural materials.
