ULISES CARRIÓNMAIL ART ANDTHE BIG MONSTERTWO LECTURES / PERFORMANCES14.02-15.02.1979
Ulises Carrión from Mexico — who has for several years lived and worked in Holland — visits Galerie S:t Petri in Lund on Wednesday, February 14, and Thursday, February 15, 1979.
He will give two lectures on Mail Art, and will also present his new project E.A.M.I.S (Erratic Art Mail International System).
About eight years ago, Ulises Carrión founded a center for artists’ books in Amsterdam. During that period, many artists who worked experimentally and in an avant-garde spirit began using the book as a means of expression. The book became an artwork. The artist/author was often involved in the production process and could therefore constantly reshape their ideas and images.
Three or four years ago, Galerie S:t Petri presented an exhibition with several of the books produced at Other Books and So (as the book workshop was called). It was the first time that artists’ books were shown in Sweden.
For Ulises Carrión, this type of activity now belongs to the past. About a year ago, he closed Other Books and So and now devotes himself to building an archive around that earlier work.
He also works with Mail Art and is attempting to create a new international postal system that would exist outside conventional national postal systems.
By using this alternative artistic mail network, he hopes to strengthen the international art community.
EAMIS will have its own stamps and postmarks. It represents an evolution of the artistic phenomenon known as Mail Art — that is, artistic messages sent through the postal system.
During his two-day visit, Ulises Carrión will give a presentation on the Mail Art phenomenon from a social and cultural perspective.
This will take place on Wednesday, February 14, at 8 p.m.
The following day — Thursday, February 15, at 8 p.m. — he will introduce his new project Erratic Art Mail International System.
