KRYSTYNA BAKERGAMES WE PLAY MASKS WE WEAR20 - 31.05.1978
“Games we play, masks we wear” is the title of Krystyna Baker’s exhibition at Galerie S:t Petri in Lund.
Krystyna Baker, from the USA, creates “subjective” art.
Depending on one’s own mood, experience, and knowledge, each person perceives one and the same image differently.
Yet all interpretations are equally valid — none is truer than another.
With the help of, among other things, sequential photographs, Krystyna Baker seeks to convey various emotional expressions — joy, sorrow, anticipation.
The expression on a person’s face can reveal much about her inner life.
But people sometimes wear masks and conceal what they really wish to show.
The fear of revealing ourselves too clearly to another person, and of perhaps being hurt, makes us close off our emotional lives.
We play games, deceiving both ourselves and others.
In addition to photographs, Krystyna Baker also shows paintings in which the square plays a significant role.
To her, the square represents the various possibilities of realizing ourselves and communicating with others.
It is your square, my square, his square, her square — and we must make the most of it without trampling on others.
It is openness, honesty, and the sense of community between people that Krystyna Baker seeks to bring forth.
The exhibition is open 20–31 May 1978,
weekdays 3 p.m. – 8 p.m.,
Saturdays and Sundays 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
