It has been practised for centuries in folk art.In Japan, text collages existed as early as the 12th century; in Western Europe, glued cuttings of paper and fabric existed around 1500. In the 17th century, individual artists — especially women — could become known through their pasted pictures.In our own century, many artists have used collage as a means of artistic expression: Picasso, Malevich, Lissitzky, Schwitters, Max Ernst, John Heartfield and Peter Weiss, to name but a few.A critic once wrote that my pictures contained “connections that no one had ever imagined”. These unexpected connections are part of the underlying driving force in my image-making. The attentive viewer can easily see this.The awareness of the connections — and the simultaneity — within events is fascinating as a starting point for creating images. It offers enormous possibilities for recreating our time in a condensed perspective, both in time and space.
