[JEANSELLEM VIEWER] — 07-26.01.1972 KENNETH WELFARE — Categories: letters, photo — Keywords: Galerie S:t Petri, Jean Sellem, archive — Image Caption : The English artist Kenneth Welfare with one of his paintings. — English artist makes Nordic debut in LundLUND: In his first exhibition in Scandinavia, the acclaimed English artist Kenneth Welfare, 33 years old, is showing about fifteen paintings from January 7 to 26 at Galerie S:t Petri in Lund. He has just come from a major exhibition in Hamburg. Previously, he has exhibited several times in London.Kenneth Welfare was born in 1939 in Brighton, southern England. He says:— The landscape of my hometown has always fascinated and inspired me.The paintings in the series he is showing in Lund are a combination of many moods and colors he has experienced and observed over the past few years. The works were painted during the past year. The entire series shows the landscape’s changes through the different seasons. When Kenneth Welfare works, he does not use brushes but small rollers. He paints on panel with acrylic paints, usually in three tones.Although he works with flat surfaces, a sense of depth is still achieved in the abstracted landscape paintings.Galerie S:t Petri — which operates completely non-commercially — is open every day. On weekdays from 3 to 8 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 5 p.m.The gallery also arranges events beyond exhibitions. In the evenings, there are often poetry or music evenings. Throughout the Christmas season, various events were held.Jean Sellman:— It all turned out very well. We had a surprisingly large number of visitors. The small and unusual gallery is located at S:t Petri Kyrkogata 5. — — — Category: letters — Letter from Kenneth Welfare (Upper Street Gallery) to Jean Sellem, 23 February 1972 — Upper Street Gallery 286 Upper Street Islington · London N1 2TZ Telephone: 01-226 9811Wednesday 23 February 1972Jean SelIem Fack 7 22101 Lund SwedenI am extremely sorry that you have had all this worry with the money for my exhibition, but it is not really my fault. After I received your letter and my returned cheque, I contacted the bank and they said that they could not forward the money to you unless I knew the name and address of your bank in Lund. As this would have taken too long to find out they suggested that I go to the Post Office and send an International Money Order to the nearest Post Office. I did this, and the Post Office in London said that the Post Office in Lund would contact you so that you could go and collect the money. The same day that I did this I sent you a letter telling you that I had forwarded the money in the form of an International Money Order to the value of £50, and that you could ask Orion for the remaining £4 and tell him to take this from the money that Alf had to send me for the painting that he bought by Barry. I know that this may seem terribly complicated but I want you to see that I did not withhold the money, but sent it as soon as I received your letter. The number of the International Money Order is 1822181 and it was issued on 8 February 1972. So perhaps you had better contact the Post Office in Lund and enquire what they have done with it. Once again my apologies for all the trouble you have had, but as you can now see I am not to blame.Sincerely, [Unsigned]— UPPER STREET GALLERY 286 UPPER STREET ISLINGTON · LONDON N1 2TZ TELEPHONE: 01-226 9811 — — — Category: letters — Letter from Kenneth Welfare (Upper Street Gallery) to N.O. I should imagine that they will be in Lund roundabout 14–15 December.Title for the exhibition:Southern English Landscapes — Kenneth WelfareIf anything is required for the catalogue I should be grateful if the following could be used:“I was born in Brighton, in the South of England, and have always been fascinated by the landscape of that area. All this information will be written on the back of each work.I still do not know the exact date of my arrival in Sweden. I shall probably stay in Malmö with an artist who is showing in the Gallery in April. However, it is most probable that I will fly Pan American to Copenhagen and cross over to Malmö by ferry. But as soon as I know the final arrangements I will let you know.I think that is everything – I hope so. I hope that you will like the new works. Everyone here is very excited by them and I trust that the Gallery will be pleased too.Yours,K.W. — — — Category: letters — Letter from Kenneth Welfare (Upper Street Gallery) to N.O.
