[JEANSELLEM VIEWER] — MATS HANSÉN TECKNINGAR 24.01 - 14.02.1973 — Categories: press, visual — Keywords: Galerie S:t Petri, Jean Sellem, archive — Category: press — At first, Mats Hansén’s drawings evoke a sense of something familiar: “Of course, that is… I have seen that before…” But when one looks at them more closely, they slip away from what is immediately recognisable. They create a feeling of uncertainty and unease. They flicker away like an over-darkened memory. The drawings possess a peculiar authenticity. They resemble darkened impressions: angular and somewhat rough, just as they are. They affect us deeply, like our darkest memories, whether we want them to or not. — — — Category: visual — — — Category: visual — — — Category: visual — — — Category: visual — — — Category: visual — — — Category: press — FIRST SOLO EXHIBITIONLUND: From 26 January to 14 February, the Lund artist Mats Hansén is exhibiting around thirty drawings at Galerie S:t Petri in Lund. He has been drawing for many years and has participated in several group exhibitions, but this is the first time he is presenting his work in a solo exhibition.Mats Hansén has attended various courses at Carl Malmsten’s Capellagården. He studied at Konstfack in Stockholm and at Grafikskolan Forum in Malmö.In the catalogue foreword, Ulf Dahlstedt describes Mats Hansén’s rapid and intense images:“Matter comes swirling towards the viewer in his drawings. At times it is condensed into solid bodies that seem to be hurled into our field of vision with tremendous force from somewhere beyond. At other times it dissolves, is transformed into energy and passes through the images like an invisible magnetic draught.“Everything is movement and transformation. Creation and disintegration. Everything takes place in one and the same present moment.”The exhibition at Galerie S:t Petri is open on weekdays from 3 to 8 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. — — — Category: press — The lines in Mats Hansén’s pencil drawings, exhibited at Galerie S:t Petri, are drawn with a blunt pencil. They do not flow, but jerk uncontrollably forward, as if under constraint. Different forms—pointed, angular and round—rush back and forth, collide, shatter and dissolve into nothingness. Sometimes they pass one another. The movements and collisions are as abstract as the objects themselves. One understands them, but cannot see them.Viola Robertson — — — Category: press — A SUGGESTIVE MAELSTROMThe Lund artist Mats Hansén is exhibiting drawings at Galerie S:t Petri in Lund. These evocative images emerged from dreams or hallucinations. They are connected to reality, although one cannot actually see how.Spheres hurtle through spaces and walls, causing a maelstrom or an explosion. A boat rocks on the sea, yet in the water behind it there is a picture depicting a landscape. The picture is divided in two, and another landscape emerges from the break. Movement, transformation and disintegration coexist within the same image. A door stands wide open onto a pitch-black room, but the light from outside does not flow in. Instead, it settles on the wall like a reflection.Everything in Mats Hansén’s work is fragmented and disharmonious. His drawing is feverish—and psychologically compelling.Mats Hansén is a gifted artist who has found his own personal style and remains faithful to his artistic ideal. He does not follow passing fashions but, in his own way, preserves the Lund tradition of painterly effects from the 1960s, represented by Jörgen Fogelquist and John Wipp. — — — Category: visual
