GERHARD RÜHM — FÜR LIDICE signed
1967 — CHF 1600
This set contains the incomplete exhibition catalogue as well as two collages by Gerhard Rühm, one of which is signed on the reverse.Below is the description sent to me by Galerie Block, whom I thank.
Montage, cardboard, newspaper
15 × 21 cm
400 unique works (with the exception of a few copies, they are unsigned).
“Gerhard Rühm’s contribution to the exhibition Hommage à Lidice at Galerie René Block in 1967 is a small montage work. As in Schablone für Zeitungsleser (EB12), where the artist’s name is cut out, an exclamation mark measuring 11 cm in height and 1 cm in width was punched out of black cardboard for this work. The two cut-out elements were glued by the artist next to the openings on the cardboard. Behind the openings, an image taken from a newspaper was placed. In this way, three pictorial layers were created. As image motifs, Rühm chose a detail from a Second World War reportage photograph. In 1967, it was not possible to photograph this subtle work in such a way that the catalogue print could convey the montage’s simultaneously poetic and accusatory character. It was therefore decided to multiply the work and to include an original piece with each catalogue. Owing to the different newspaper images used, 400 unique works were produced. With the exception of a few copies, they are unsigned.”
