OLD MEDIA 1
Jacques Charlier from Belgium is one of about twenty participants in New Media 1, Malmö Konsthall.
During the opening, as well as at the subsequent dinner, he photographed extensively, and the result — 180 unique images — is shown together with a number of newspaper articles about the Konsthall at Galerie S:t Petri, Lund, from 25 April to 7 May 1975.
OLD MEDIA 1, as the exhibition in Lund is called, describes in an impersonal way the situation in the Konsthall and at the dinner table on the opening day — what people did, their attitudes, and expressions.
Jacques Charlier has long been engaged in this kind of factual documentation.
Many times, banal and trivial human encounters are taken out of their usual context and placed within an artistic framework.
In this way, he can highlight a particular event, activity, or situation at a specific place and time.
For years, Jacques Charlier has worked at a government office in Liège, where he has often photographically documented certain events — for example, retirements, conferences, and parties.
These series of images have since been exhibited in various places across Europe.
The photographic technique has enabled him to isolate single occurrences from their surroundings, make them visible, and set them against one another.
Jacques Charlier’s perhaps somewhat monotonous image series, once one becomes accustomed to them, often raise the question of the value of life.
The exhibition is open on weekdays 15:00–20:00,
and on Saturdays and Sundays 12:00–17:00.
