JACEK TYLICKILIVING IN THE TREE18 - 29.10.1979
A chestnut tree in southern Lund has been involved in an experiment carried out by the Polish artist Jacek Tylicki during the night between August 31 and September 1. He spent 18 hours in a hammock up in the tree. It is about wanting to test the body’s ability to withstand stress, to defy the natural elements. Alpinism and solo sailing also fascinate him.
The idea of wanting to live in the tree emerged while Jacek Tylicki was engaged in another project in which the same chestnut tree was also included. Since January 1 this year, he has been photographing the tree every day between 1 and 2 p.m. He intends to continue doing so until January 1, 1980, when the cyclical process comes to an end. The purpose is to attempt to visualize the passage of time through a series of images, to experience time visually, to directly observe change. In the picture series, one notices how differently each day appears. Everything is unique, unrepeatable. There is constant change.
Jacek Tylicki would also like to try living in the tree for a longer period together with a few other people, to see how humans cope with such a situation; how the relationships between the people would develop.
At Galerie S:t Petri in Lund, color photographs are shown from the experiment in the chestnut tree as well as the changes it has undergone since January. The exhibition runs from October 18–29, 1979. The gallery is open weekdays from 3–8 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 1–5 p.m.
