Handing out poetry booklet
The idealists at Galerie S:t Petri in Lund have suddenly established themselves as book publishers and are presenting a small poetry collection by Arne Zaring. It costs nothing and is handed out free of charge to anyone who registers their interest.
The print run is 500 copies, of which 200 are numbered and signed. But not even those 200 have any price.
For Arne Zaring this is a debut. He is 37, studied at the School of Social Work in Lund at an exceptionally slow pace, has worked as a forestry worker, a driver, a social assistant, among other things, and has now found a publisher who is financing a non-commercial debut.
What does it cost to print a little book of verse like this (it is called “Poetry”)?
Between 600 and 700 kronor. S:t Petri not only exhibits art but also arranges small concerts, debates, lectures and—poetry evenings.
The poetry booklet is, as said, the first book, but the gallery hopes it will manage to produce more.

Due to a printing error caused by the omission of a double-page spread, it proved impossible to assemble the book within its cover. Today, only a few rare complete copies survive, along with a quantity of loose inner pages and separate covers.
In September 2025, we contacted the artist to let him know that we had copies of this book which he himself had never been able to see in fifty years, and we sent him one copy.
We also had three small questions:
- Your book is titled Déjeuner sur l'herbe Set 1. Did you intend to make a second set?
- Who are the people in the photos recreating Manet’s painting?
I had originally intended to make many more sets to complete the possible permutations but it would have been an overwhelming task. It would have involved photographing each of my models, individually, naked and dressed, in each of the four poses, then printing a set of prints for each model, prints from which I hand-cut the outlines of each figure. This much I completed. But the next stage was to hand-assemble dozens of sets of sixteen following Manet's composition and my logic, then re-photograph each photo-montage and print them out, set by set. This (massive) stage defeated me.
My models were (left to right): Carolee Schneemann, Anthony McCall, Sheila McLaughlin, Max Scott.
My visit to the gallery took place in 1975 when I was in Sweden to participate in the exhibition at the Malmo Konsthall "New Media I". In that exhibition I showed my Manet photographs and the schematic diagrams presenting the logic for the complete series; and one evening I showed my 1973 film "Line Describing a Cone".

Printer’s imprint on the inside rear cover: “Tryckbaren, Lund 1976”.
This edition was in fact never completed in 500 copies. The Jean Sellem archives preserve at least 200 already printed covers, but the gallery’s financial resources did not allow for the printing of the contents or the assembly of these copies.
This is the very first English edition of Jan Świdziński’s text.
Foreword
Art as Contextual Art - Subject of the Conference at Malmö Konsthall, Sweden, February 9, 1976.
A model of contextual art has been formulated in the texts written by Jan Świdziński. The principles found here are the basis for the first exposition of Contextual Art organized by Jean Sellem, Galerie S:t Petri, Lund, for the Institute of Art History, Lund University, February 5 - March 5, 1976.
Wojciech Bruszewski, Zbigniew Dłubak, Henryk Gajewski, Andrzej Jórczak, Anna Kutera, Paweł Kwiek, Romuald Kutera, Lech Mrożek, Józef Robakowski, Jan Świdziński, Ryszard Waśko participate in the exposition.
Certain remarks concerning the published works:
"Models of Art" is a shortened form of the work "Relations and Models of Art" by Jan Świdziński, which is being prepared for printing by the Remont Gallery, Warsaw, Poland,
"Some Remarks about Contextual Art - Cinema" is a shortened form of the work "The Model of Cinema" by Jan Świdziński, published by Warsztat Formy Filmowej Łódź.
"Contextual Art - Photography", prepared for the exposition, is from the work entitled "Systems" by Zbigniew Dłubak, published by Remont Gallery in 1975.
